Story so far
S is for... Sports Coaching is a simple and straightforward style of sports coaching. It spawned from a blog called, S is for... Something.
S is for... Something was created by me, Chris Davy. I wanted a way to collate and share my coaching skills, knowledge, and experience; so I started writing a blog.
In 2007, after finishing my degree in Film Studies and Media & Cultural Studies at Kingston University, I wanted a way to start getting fit and healthy again. I think I can be forgiven for not being in the best shape at the time, considering studying this topic requires a lot of sitting, thinking and analysing.
I had done a lot of sport in my youth; namely football, gymnastics, and tennis. But I always had a love and an affinity for basketball. So, in 2009, I set about forming a basketball club in the town I grew up in; Exmouth, Devon. I created a project called Bridge Building Basketball Exmouth (Logo by Ryan Ousley), and with the help of a friend that I had made washing dishes at work, Ben Adams, we set about growing the basketball culture in Exmouth. Over the course of a year, people from across the local region joined the project and together in 2010 we all founded Exmouth Jesters Basketball Club.
I stepped away from the club after a few seasons to pursue my 'professional career'. However, the club still exists to this day and is currently known as Exmouth Knights. I am immensely proud and grateful for everything everyone has given to the club and the town over the years in order for the club to grow.
These are some of the sports qualifications I have gone on to achieve along my journey:
Level 3 Certificate in Basketball Coaching
Level 2 Multi Sports Activity Leader
Level 2 Introduction to Counselling Skills
Level 1 Assistant Coach - British American Football
Level 1 Award in Coaching Football
During this time, I also volunteered to develop both the Exmouth Community College and Exeter College basketball programmes. In addition to this, I coached the University of Exeter Women's Team.
Over the years, I have continued to develop my own coaching style and philosophy, and I am now at a stage where I really believe in utilising one particular tool; mnemonics. I believe the skilful use of mnemonics will provide great benefits to anyone in any area of their life, not just in sport.
S is for... Sports Coaching is a method that I developed to quickly summarise some of the key elements that I believe need addressing when it comes to participating in, and enjoying any sport. I believe enjoying sport, leisure, exercise, whatever you want to call it, in some capacity is vital to living a healthy, happy lifestyle.
I hope you find the information I provide useful and valuable, and I wish you all the best in your sporting activities.
